Countryside Eco-festival: Public Talk Series 2024

2 March 2024 & 9 March 2024

Rivers and streams define our landscape and the wildlife that depend on them. Despite decades of irrigation and drainage development, the freshwater ecosystems in Hong Kong are still teeming with life. In this talk series, researchers and conservation practitioners will share with you the stories of some of the plants and animals in Hong Kong.

Wicked Weeds! What They Are and What We Can Do About Them

Hong Kong has over 2300 species of native plants that support local wildlife and provide a wealth of ecosystem services. However, there are also dozens of non-native, introduced plants that wreak havoc in our countryside, driving species extinction and obliterating delicate ecological interactions. It’s time to see these weeds for what they are and stand up for local plant life!

New ‘Fish’ on the Block

Are you a fan of crayfish? The Australian Redclaw Crayfish, a non-native species, has been introduced to Hong Kong in recent years. In this workshop, we will explore how researchers employ advanced technologies such as eDNA detection and radio transmitters to gain a deeper understanding of the distribution and ecological impact of this intriguing newcomer in the region.

Native Freshwater Turtles

Over half of the freshwater turtle species in the world are threatened. Despite the small size of the territory, Hong Kong is home to some endangered freshwater turtles. This talk will introduce some of the native turtles and what has been done to protect them.

Hong Kong newt is the only species of salamander found in Hong Kong. In this talk, audience will discover their unique life cycle and fascinating behaviors during the breeding season, stepping into the daily life of these newts and the threats they face.

Streams nurture different crops such as rice, watercress, and water spinach. This is an indispensable part of Hong Kong's agriculture. The talk gently shares aquatic crops stories from the perspectives of history, planting, and ecology.
