Did you know that Hong Kong was once covered in vast evergreen forests that were home to towering trees, lush assemblages of understorey shrubs and herbs, and an array of amazing wildlife?
Over the course of centuries of deforestation and land-use change, these diverse forests have been wiped out and many local species have disappeared with them.
Our vision
KFBG is the only organization in Hong Kong to implement a comprehensive forest restoration programme aimed at recreating an ecosystem that closely approximates to the natural forests that once occurred here.

Why Forest Restoration?
Over the past two decades, KFBG has been researching the most effective ways of re-establishing a diverse mixture of native plants in complex, self-sustaining forests. Over this period, we have planted more than 100,000 tree seedlings representing more than 300 native species.
But KFBG doesn’t only plant and grow trees. We also work with shrubs, palms, vines, epiphytes and understorey herbs, emphasising the importance of all local biodiversity in encouraging the return of native wildlife and reinvigorating vital ecosystem processes. And we continue nurturing our new native woodland long after the seedlings have been planted to ensure its ongoing health and vitality.
Where do all these plants come from?
Our botanists explore tiny remaining fragments of the original vegetation that are scattered across Hong Kong in search of rare plants, collecting their seeds and propagating them in our nurseries. The resulting seedlings are used to replant Hong Kong's lost forests through the process of ecological restoration – an evidence-based effort to overcome centuries of degradation and restore the vibrant woodlands on our slopes.
