2026 World Otter Day Celebration Event

Otter’s Journey Through Time and Space: Decoding the History and Current Status of Hong Kong Otters (Talk) | Lantau Conservation Fund

Did you know there are wild otters in Hong Kong 😳?

That’s absolutely right! They used to roam across almost the entire territory in the past, and many older fishermen are still familiar with them. However, recent studies show that since the 1960s, otters have been teetering on the brink of local extinction. What caused this decline? And what new hope does the recent rediscovery of otter signs in northern Lantau waters, after more than half a century, bring to their conservation work? ✨

This year marks the 10th World Otter Day 🦦, with various celebration activities taking place around the world. In Hong Kong, two of our KFBG frontline otter researchers share the century-long story of the ups and downs of Hong Kong otters, as well as our latest efforts with the Lantau Otter Conservation Project, including how otter surveys are conducted and some fun stories from the field! We warmly invite you to join our talk and learn more about this mysterious neighbour we often hear about but rarely see!

Seats are limited. Register now to secure your spot! If seats are available, walk-ins are also welcome on the day of the event starting at 2:30pm on a first-come, first-serve basis.
