Awakening of Memory – Writing with the Ancestors and Nature Half day Experience with Colin Campbell

Join us for a special day of writing ritual with Colin Campbell, whose practice aims to take people of all nations into a restored and reconnected relationship with the wider natural world.

In this gathering, Colin guides us through a contemporary ritual of Ancestral Writing and Deep Listening. This practice is a sacred means of finding the words that bridge our human experience with the "other-than-human" voices of the land. This writing practice uses silence and focused intent to clear the static of modern life, allowing us to hear the stories that have been waiting to be told.

Historically, there were those—the scribes, poets, and seers—who offered themselves as intermediaries. They sat where the "veils were thin," beside mountain springs and ancient trees, to take down the whispers and instructions of nature. We invite you to sit beside those veils again. By tuning our "animal ears" to the subtle frequencies of the mountain, we will use our pens to create a bridge between the seen and the unseen.

The day includes:

  • Introduction to Ancestral Connection: Understanding the wisdom traditions of South Africa and how they intersect with our modern lives.

  • The Practice of Deep Listening: Tuning our "animal ears" to the subtle voices of the mountain and the spirits of place.

  • The Writing Ritual: Guided processes to find the voices of those who came before us—our ancestors of line and of land—who hold medicinal stories for our time.

Who is this for?

  • Those wishing to develop their listening and writing as a spiritual practice.

  • Anyone seeking to remember the place of humans within nature as our original home.

  • Individuals interested in ancestral wisdom and indigenous ritual.

KFBG 70th Anniversary – Awakening of Memory

The Writing with the Ancestors and Nature half-day experience is a part of the celebrations marking the special occasion of KFBG’s 70th anniversary. It integrates a wider series of activities curated to deepen our connection with the Earth.

Guided by the theme ‘Awakening of Memory’, these gatherings call us to remember our place within the greater community of beings. This anniversary is an invitation to return, to remember, and to share the stories that bind us to this living landscape of KFBG’s mountain. It is about how we live in the present and the future we shape together—deepening the dialogue between people and nature, and carrying this shared legacy forward in an ever-changing world.

About the Teachers

Colin Campbell

As a descendant of Scottish aristocracy, born in Zimbabwe (1963) and trained by some of the most renowned African healers of Southern Africa, Colin Campbell has become known for being a knowledge-bridge between rare pre-industrial African culture and contemporary Western culture.

As a child, Colin travelled through Africa with his father, Alec Campbell, a celebrated cultural historian and archaeologist. From the age of seven, he was introduced to some of the most powerful African healers and magicians in Botswana, who instantly recognised the boy’s calling as a healer and accepted him as a student. Colin experienced and integrated ancient aspects of traditional African knowledge through the rigorous rituals and training from his teachers. This resulted in a deep understanding of animism and its inextricable connection to the natural world.

Through his in-depth knowledge of African culture, Jungian psychology and contemporary artistic practice, Colin has cultivated a uniquely authentic personal philosophy that he has developed into wilderness-based practices. His practices aim to take people of all nations into a restored and reconnected relationship with the wider natural world.
