Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) is situated on the northern slopes of Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong's highest mountain, near the town of Tai Po. Originally established to provide agricultural support to local farmers, KFBG has since evolved into a science-based organisation dedicated to species conservation and ecosystem restoration. Today, KFBG is a precious conserved area of 148 ha where the public can experience and connect with nature. KFBG has a key aim to promote the harmonious coexistence of the public and the environment through nature conservation, holistic education and sustainable living projects. In celebration of National Ecology Day, in addition to providing free entry on 15 August we are offering several complimentary activities for public participation and to experience the beauty and vitality of natural ecology, while raising awareness of environmental protection and sustainable development.

Eco-Tour – Butterfly Walk KFBG is home to more than 200 species of butterflies, accounting for almost 80% of butterfly species in Hong Kong. In addition to butterfly watching, participants can learn about their habits and basic identification during the tour. Our butterfly experts are eager to share the interesting stories of these amazing creatures with you.
Introduction of Seasonal vegetable and herbs On this slow walk in the Eco Garden, our guide assists participants to identify and recognise different seasonal vegetables and herbs, using all five senses. Participants will also learn how the growing of crops and ecological conservation can coexist sustainably and in harmony.
Fern Mounting Workshop Ferns are among the oldest plants on Earth, with experts estimating their existence goes as far back as 400 million years. Today, there are approximately 10,000 species of ferns, which do not have flowers or seeds; instead, they usually reproduce sexually by tiny spores or sometimes reproduce vegetatively. In our garden, participants will explore the many varieties of ferns that grow naturally on giant trees, in streams and on cliffs, carried by the wind. Join our workshop and discover the Bird-nest Fern, a fascinating species that grows in the garden. Learn how to make moss balls and take home a piece of this unique plant to enjoy in one’s own space.

The Tracks of Wildlife at KFBG KFBG is home to a rich biodiversity, although spotting wild animals can be challenging. Through photo and footage displays and an engaging interactive game, participants will learn about wild animals at KFBG and how to identify the signs of animal activity. A series of ecological pocket guides are also available for those interested in wildlife identification.
Make your own pot workshop Small spaces can also be used to grow food! Through the workshop, participants can understand the value of urban farming and prepare their own pot. Planting tips and experience will also be shared.
Animal Encounter Since 1994, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden's Wild Animal Rescue Centre has received over 65,000 wild animals. While many have been rehabilitated and released back to the wild, some remain at KFBG as permanent residents, and education ambassadors. The Animal Encounter activity provides an opportunity for visitors to get up close with a friendly ball python, and find out more about this attractive snake and why it was rescued by KFBG. Participants will also learn more about nature conservation and the impact of the illegal wildlife trade, helping attendees to make more informed decisions that will benefit nature.
Streamside Walk Immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature at KFBG's lower farm area. Stroll alongside the stream and discover the beauty of our nature reserve. With a bit of luck, you may spot some fascinating wildlife. Our knowledgeable guides will also introduce you to the wildlife-friendly initiatives we have implemented in the area to support the local ecosystem.
