Plant Encounters

  1. Introduction

Do you know how many plant species can be found in the wild in Hong Kong?

Have you ever wondered how these native plants are pollinated?

Do you know which species can be used to make natural dyes and preserves or to celebrate particular festivals?

Plants are all around us, but how much do you know about the many ways in which they support our lives?

KFBG Plant Encounters programme, which offers four sessions per month, introduces the diversity and ecology of Hong Kong native plants. You will learn from staff of KFBG’s Flora Conservation Department about the generous green world that surrounds us, thus deepening your appreciation of the fragile beauty of the many rare species that naturally occur here. Income is used to support KFBG's ongoing plant conservation work.

Keep an eye on the monthly schedule and join us to delve into our beautiful but threatened flora – and grow your understanding of why protecting native plants is a vital shared responsibility.

    2. Schedule and Details

    Plant Encounters May Theme:

In the past, village communities accumulated rich ethnobotanical knowledge, skilfully making use of the natural resources available around them to sustain and enhance their daily lives—for example, by making herbal teas, medicines, food and clothing. Plants have always been closely connected to human life: they not only shape our environment, but are also deeply woven into cultural traditions and everyday practices.

Today, many of these traditional uses of plants are gradually being forgotten. Join this month’s Plant Encounters programme to rediscover the connections between Hong Kong’s native plants and traditional culture. Income will be used to support KFBG's plant conservation work. Spaces are limited, so sign up now!

You can also take this opportunity to pick up the new publication Plants, People and Village Life: Ethnobotanical Stories of Chuen Lung!
