Senior Projects Assistant (Animal Care)

Major responsibilities

The Fauna Conservation Department is looking for a suitable person to join the Project Team and support the valuable conservation work that is being undertaken at the centre. The post will provide an opportunity to gain experience in many areas of species conservation, animal care and husbandry and project design.

The suitable candidate will have the opportunity to join projects that have a focus on endangered turtles, snakes, frogs, bats and undertake environmental enhancement work.

This is an individual contributor role. The incumbent will report to the Conservation Officer (Projects).

To provide general captive care of turtles that are part of an ex-situ conservation project

  • Carry out animal cleaning and husbandry tasks as directed and to the standards required.
  • Prepare and present animal feed as indicated and required by animals under care.
  • Carry out daily cleaning and disinfection and restocking when necessary of equipment and work tools.
  • Maintain scientific records for animals and assist with data entry as directed.
  • Maintain facilities and surrounding work areas in a clean, orderly condition as directed or in line with standard operation procedures provided.
  • Assist with behavioural monitoring and provide inputs to research reports and other documentation.

To assist with the Wild Snake Rescue Project, including:

  • Processing individuals.
  • Data collection and reporting.
  • Re-release activities.

To assist with field visits as part of the department’s conservation projects, including:

  • Species habitat management and monitoring for endangered frog species.
  • Assist with fauna monitoring (field input and data collation) in the KFBG nature reserve.

To provide a support role for all other aspects of the Project Team’s work undertaken by the Fauna Conservation Department, including:

  • To provide support and field input for the Wildlife Conflict Programme.
  • Record keeping and management of the natural history specimen collection.
  • Assisting with data collection and reporting.
  • Work from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Five-day work week with weekend and public holiday attendance required on a roster system.

Job Requirements

  • Commitment to the mission, vision and values of KFBGC.
  • Previous related experience with animals, with hands-on experience in animal husbandry preferred.
  • A qualification in biological science, animal husbandry or related subjects
  • Preferably bilingual in both written and spoken Cantonese and English.
  • Physically fit to work in an outdoor environment and in adverse weather.
  • Able to work independently and also work in a team.
  • Driving licence an advantage.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Honest, responsible and friendly.
