Barking Deer Sasa and Didi Move Into New Home

Animal Stories

The two female barking deer that have been with KFBG for several years, recently moved into their new open-air enclosure at Piers Jacobs Wildlife Sanctuary. Visitors can now visit them through the indoor gallery exhibit area. Alternatively, visitors can also see them from above if they are on the bridge next to the domestic pig exhibit.

Didi

Sasa

Sasa and Didi are orphaned native barking deer. Sasa was only a month old when she was discovered alone in Sai Kung in 2013. Didi was discovered by staff working on the KFBG hillside in 2015. She was about a week old, skinny and weak and her umbilical wound was infected, which suggested that her mother had not been caring for her.
Both deer were admitted to the KFBG Wild Animal Rescue Centre and required hand raising because they were too young to survive without their mother's care and guidance. Due to the regular contact, they grew up habituated to humans and were not suitable animals for release back to the wild.

Members of the public should leave young wild animals alone unless they are sure they have been abandoned, if this is the case, they can call SPCA (2711 1000) or AFCD (1823) for further rescue action.
