Earth Day Tree Planting 2015

Activity Report

On 22 April 2015, 192 KFBG staff and a board member joined the tree planting activity held at KFBG. We planted 1,280 seedlings of 20 native species in 4 experimental plots at Tai Mo Shan, while 338 seedlings in 31 native species were planted in planters along the main road from Sign Post Corner to T.S. Woo Memorial Pavilion. Besides using tree guards to protect the seedlings, coconut mats and jute mats were applied as mulch to prevent growth of weeds.  For the planting along the main road, we are looking forward to seeing more showy flowers in future.

We are also excited to know that our mulching experiment was very successful. The trees grew much faster because of the newly formed soil, and what's more, the decaying wood chips attractted and apparently fed a lot of native wildlife such as barking deer and masked palm civet. The forest has re-established and it has led to the restoration of local bio-diversity.
