'In Touch with Nature' Winter Camp for Children 2015
A ‘Sky Trail Challenge’, ‘Animal Detectives’ activities and the ‘Art in Nature’ workshops are some of the highlights that enchanted children taking part in our ‘In Touch with Nature’ 3-Day Winter Camp in December. Our Education Department interns acted as camp counsellors and, along with other staff, led two groups of 25 campers aged seven to ten years in activities including hiking, interactive drama and chalk workshops, and creating animal footprints art.
Children hiking on the Sky Trail
Walking on the grass barefoot
Even though the weather was foggy on the hiking day, we decided to take on the challenge of the Sky Trail. The weather obscured the breath-taking scenery of the valleys, but instead many memories of friendship and teamwork were created. “Watch out for the narrow path ahead!’, ‘Don’t step on the rocks, they’re very slippery!” Such friendly words of warning with serious facial expressions were passed back along the line and helping hands willingly offered. An older boy searched for natural hiking sticks for the younger ones and there were moments of excitement: “Oh, there’s a footprint by the puddle up ahead!” The young campers should all be super proud of themselves, not only did they complete the challenge but they did it with an amazing team spirit. One little boy told me after the hike, “That was so exciting, I want to do it again!”
Picnic at Kwun Yum Shan
Having an afternoon nap under the sun
The sky had cleared by lunch time and we were able to enjoy a lovely picnic at Kwun Yum Shan with a magical glimpse of sunshine. Some children decided to take off their shoes and feel the grass and others enjoyed sunbathing - in precious ways like these we were able to feel in touch with Nature.
Creating a colorful rainforest together
Concentrating on the weaving activity
The boy dressing his twig in blue
It took us by surprise when one camper, an energetic little boy, sat down silently in the corner inside the Art House and spent half an hour creating his coloring twig, dressing it in blue and giving it his full concentration. One child said: “This art carnival is like the AIA carnival, only better!” Many of the children told us one of the highlights for them was playing detectives in the “Incense Tree Mission”, part of the interactive drama workshop.
Creating animal foot print art
Looking for clues as detectives
Creating a big tree with the whole camp at drama workshop
It was heart-warming to receive emails from parents after camp with very positive feedback on the programme and enquiries about future camps at KFBG.

The experience was short but sweet: the children stayed warm and active on this 3-Day winter programme. They discovered they had the courage to face challenges and take some risks; they built new friendships and may have discovered in themselves new strengths, all by simply being in Nature.
There will be a Summer Camp for Children this year, please sign up for "Friends of KFBG" and receive updates about all our upcoming events!
