Reconnecting with our Roots: Spirit, Culture & Nature

Activity Report

In November 2016, Dr. Satish Kumar, the renowned educator and writer from Schumacher College in the UK and Mr. Jhon Kwano, an elder and messenger from an indigenous tribe in Papua New Guinea, acted as our visiting speakers in a 3-day residential workshop entitled ‘Reconnecting with our Roots: Spirit, Culture & Nature’ held in a sustainable living site - the Green Hub, Tai Po - and the beautiful environs of the Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Gardens (KFBG).

A public talk by Dr. Kumar: ‘Reconnecting with our Roots: Spirit, Culture & Nature’
Attendees listen enthralled to Jhon Kwano’s talk ‘Learning from Papua New Guinea’

The workshop began with a public talk by Dr. Kumar attended by more than 70 individuals. Over the following three days, through talks and storytelling sessions, Dr. Kumar and Mr. Kwano helped us explore what it means to live in harmony with Nature, as our ancestors used to, and how to become truly happy as we face unprecedented challenges in the modern context. Their sharing was very insightful and uplifting for all concerned.

We also invited a local guest speaker - Dr. Billy Hau, whose family has lived in Hong Kong for 27 generations - to share with participants the story of his ancestry. His sharing, too, was so sincere that it deeply touched everyone’s heart.

Participants enjoying the facilitated exercise

Apart from sharing by speakers, our facilitated exercises - ‘Dialogue with your Ancestors’, ‘Double Circle’ and ‘Letter from the Future’ inspired by the book of Joanna Macy - provided a wonderful opportunity for participants to reflect upon their own ancestry, uncover an understanding of our common humanity, and develop a feeling of reverence for our home the Earth.

In addition, participants enjoyed many cultural and Nature-related outdoor activities in the beautiful environs of KFBG such as Hakka folk songs sharing and bracelet weaving demonstration by two senior staff of KFBG of Hakka origin along with farming and harvesting activities, a Nature walk at night, and a singing bowls performance on the summit of Kwun Yum Shan.

Together with living at the tranquil heritage site of the Green Hub, many participants were impressed by the wisdom of the speakers, the thoughtful design of the workshops, the logistical and catering service of the staff, and the beautiful heart of the organisation - KFBG.

In March and September, Dr. Claire Elouard, teacher of the Energy of Nature Workshop, will also lead the 1-day Introductory, 5-day Level 1 Workshop and 3-day Level 2 workshop. In December, Japanese cultural anthropologist, environmentalist and public speaker Keibo Oiwa will run a 5-day residential workshop at KFBG. We look forward to seeing you in our transformative workshops!
