Rescued Raptor Reappears in HK
On 4th December 2012, the Wildlife Rescue Centre treated an Eastern Common Buzzard that was thought to be suffering concussion from a flight impact. Although initial examinations showed that the raptor’s health condition was good, we kept it under close observation for several days to play safe. When it was deemed fit, it was fitted with leg rings and released.
Over four years later on 12th January 2017, the bird was discovered in Tsim Sha Tsui. Unfortunately it was discovered dead (the reasons are unknown because no post-mortem examination was carried out), however, we are pleased to know that our rehabilitation work in 2012 paid off because the individual probably completed four migratory journeys between its breeding grounds in Siberia and northeastern China and wintering grounds in southern China following release. Such long-haul flights are a true test of physical endurance.
Every leg ring has a story. We encourage members of the public to report any discoveries of bird carcasses with leg bands to AFCD and the HK Bird Watching Society. But do be reminded to not touch the carcass.
