Threats to native orchids
Sadly, due to habitat loss and illegal collection, more than half of all native Hong Kong orchids are on the verge of disappearing completely from our countryside.

Our challenge
To address this, our botanists research the ecology of South China’s wild orchids and our horticulturalists propagate and reintroduce them back into the wild.

Orchid Nurseries
We grow tens of thousands of orchid plants belonging to hundreds of different species that are native to Hong Kong and nearby parts of tropical Asia. Our living collections serve as a repository for rare and endangered species, and by propagating them from divisions or seed, we offset the risk of their extinction in the wild. Through public display, the plants also help us to raise awareness about the fragile beauty of orchids.

You can help us by undertaking the below actions:

or

Orchid Micropropagation Laboratory
This is where we grow orchids from seed. As orchids have tiny seeds that cannot be germinated in pots outdoors, each generation of rare orchid plants starts life in glass flasks in which all the required nutrients for early growth are provided. This process may take several years until the seedlings are strong enough to be transferred to the nursery. Throughout this period, our technicians provide them with dedicated care and attention.

Orchid Greenhouse
Our Orchid Greenhouse is a microcosm of tropical orchid diversity. It showcases captivating displays of flowering orchids from floor to ceiling, either in naturalistic settings or in potted arrangements, offering spectacular views of their beguiling beauty at any time in the year.

Orchid Haven, including the Gloria Barretto Orchid Sanctuary

Take a stroll around this serene garden and discover hundreds of orchids planted on rocks and trees or peeping out from the undergrowth, appearing as they would in the wild. Savour the birdsong and sound of running water, as you appreciate the many ways in which orchids co-exist with numerous other plants, animals and fungi.
