KEP 2025 Talk Series | ‘Journey of the Universe’ – Film Screening and Half-day Nature Experience

Join us for a half-day nature experience at KFBG, featuring the film screening of ‘Journey of the Universe’ and a post-screening online exchange with the producers, Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim, who are the Senior Lecturers and Research Scholars at Yale University. ‘Journey of the Universe’ is a multimedia project presenting an epic story of cosmic Earth and human evolution. It consists of an Emmy Award-winning film drawing on the discoveries of modern science and the wisdom of the world's cultures.

The film narrates the 14-billion-year story of the universe's development, from the great flaring forth at its inception to the emergence of simple molecules and atoms, from the evolution of galaxies, stars and solar systems to planetary life of greater complexity and consciousness. This is a story that inspires wonder as we begin to understand this complexity through science and appreciate beauty through poetry, art, history, philosophy and religion. In times of immense challenge on every front – socially, politically, ecologically and spiritually, we need a new story to reorient and ground ourselves to meet these challenges. A comprehensive story of the universe, Earth and humans can inspire transformation in our times and move us toward the creative flourishing of the Earth community.

We are pleased to invite you to join this half-day nature experience at KFBG. This special afternoon includes:

  • Solo time with moderated forest-immersion guided support in the beautiful lower stream area of KFBG.
  • A light sustainable vegan dinner provided by Green Hub.
  • ‘Journey of the Universe’ film screening.
  • Post-screening online dialogue and exchange with the producers Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim.

You are welcome to join the full half-day experience onsite at KFBG, or you can choose to participate only in the film screening and post-screening talk, either onsite or online via Zoom.

Speakers

Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim

Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim are affiliated faculty with the Yale Center for
Environmental Justice at the Yale School of the Environment. They direct the Yale Forum on
Religion and Ecology, which arose from ten conferences they organized at Harvard's Center for
the Study of World Religions. They are series editors of the Harvard volumes from the
conferences on Religion and Ecology.

Tucker specializes in East Asian religions, especially Confucianism. Grim specializes in
indigenous traditions, especially Native American religions.

Grim and Tucker have written a number of books including Ecology and Religion (Island Press,
2014) and edited the Routledge Handbook of Religion and Ecology (2017). They are editors for
the series on Ecology and Justice from Orbis Books. They have created six online courses in
Religions and Ecology: Restoring the Earth Community.

They were students of Thomas Berry and collaborated over several decades to edit his books.
They also wrote Thomas Berry: A Biography with Andrew Angyal (Columbia, 2019).

With his article “The New Story,” Berry was a major inspiration for Journey of the Universe.
With Brian Thomas Swimme, Tucker and Grim created this multi-media project that includes a
book (Yale, 2011), an Emmy award winning film, a series of Conversations, and online courses
from Yale/Coursera.

Until 2020, following in Berry’s footsteps, Grim served as president of the American Teilhard
Association and Tucker as Vice President for over three decades.
