The story of a Chinese Hackberry tree
Once upon a hillside at KFBG, a sturdy Chinese Hackberry (Celtis sinensis) stood tall through countless seasons. Year after year, its branches reached proudly outward in a multitude of form, sheltering forest creatures from wind and rain while offering shade, food and home. Weakened by disease and pest infestation, the grand tree gradually declined, until this summer, when it quietly stepped down from the mountain stage and bade farewell to the hillside. While we don’t have a crystal ball to predict the fate of every tree at the Farm, we refuse to let their stories simply end.
Though its living journey reached its pause this summer, we carefully selected and prepared timber from this very Hackberry tree to transform it into the craft kit resting in your hands. Every wooden block retains the unique growth grain and natural hues shaped on that hillside. Carving this wood is not only an act of creation, but a gentle rebirth for the tree inside your home, practising nature’s cycle and sustainable living side by side.
