Stop for a moment and think of the many ways in which our lives are made possible by plants: from the critical life-supporting function they play by absorbing our waste carbon dioxide and releasing replenishing oxygen, the array of flavourings derived from flowers, fruits and leaves that embellish our food, to the production of paper, medicines, construction materials and fuel.
