The 22nd Kadoorie Brothers Memorial Race
On 18 December 2016, we held the 22nd Kadoorie Brothers Memorial Race to commemorate the Kadoorie brothers, Lord Lawrence and Sir Horace. This time we have received over 300 applications and 153 runners participated on that day. Among them, Ms Yiu Kit Ching the 2016 Olympic Games representative of Hong Kong and her husband Mr Chan Ka Ho, the Hong Kong record holder for the 3,000 metres steeplechase also participated in the race.
Runners ran from the starting point outside the Farm Shop
The length of the course is 5.3 km and rises steeply uphill along roads through various sections of KFBG, finishing at the Kadoorie Brothers Memorial Pavilion (602 m). It is a tough and rewarding uphill race. We have 18 runners who are 60 years old or above, the eldest runner is 67 years old and the youngest runner is at the age of 7 only.
Yiu Kit Ching broke the women’s winner time record
The runner couple Chan Ka Ho and Yiu Kit Ching broke both men and women’s winner time records which were 28min 6sec (2005) and 33min (2007) respectively. For the detailed results, please see the following tables.

It is the first time for the winning couple to participate in the Kadoorie Brothers Memorial Race. They felt very excited to become champions and new record holders together, in the same race. Both of them agreed that the race is challenging because there are many steep uphill roads. Yet it is also an enjoyable running experience because they could hear the birds singing and enjoy the cool breeze in the forest along the way. Most of the other runners mixed running with walking.

Pangolin trophy for the winners of the 22nd Kadoorie Brothers Memorial Race
The trophy this year was a wooden figurine of a pangolin. The Chinese Pangolin is often referred to as a scaly ant-eater. Because of its high demand by humans, as food and the unsubstantiated belief in its medicinal properties, the global population has dramatically declined. In Cantonese Pangolin is pronounced “Chuen San Gaap” which literally means “an armour plated animal that burrows through mountains”. The trophy represents a special achievement for the runners in this event as the route goes through an important wildlife sanctuary on the mountain which is also perfect habitat for pangolins.
