ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAMME 2025-2026|‘Impressions, Expressions – feeling & depicting nature’ Botanical Art Exhibition

The Artist-in-Residence Programme at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) aims to foster unity and evoke our connection with nature through art. From 2025 to 2026, the programme cordially invites two curators from our Flora Conservation Department, Li Man Ching (Jenny Li) and Yeung Wai Kong (Kelvin Yeung), who possess years of experience in plant conservation and illustration, to serve as our Artists-in-Residence. They will present their creative works to the public through the art exhibition ‘Impressions, Expressions – feeling & depicting nature’. The exhibition encourages visitors to think beyond conventional perspectives and rediscover native plants through the dual lenses of science and art.

Artist’s Journey through Nature

KFBG has been dedicated to plant conservation for many years. As a non-profit charitable organisation in Hong Kong that encompasses seed collection, seedling cultivation, planting, conservation, scientific research and education, we are particularly passionate about conserving and promoting Hong Kong's native plants. The two artists depict seven representative Hong Kong native plant species using two distinct artistic forms with rich visual contrast: botanical illustration and traditional Chinese painting.

These plants include the rare and critically endangered Long-eared Dog Orchid (Bulbophyllum bicolor), the rare and strikingly colourful Hong Kong Lady's Slipper Orchid (Paphiopedilum purpuratum), the large tree Ford's Manglietia (Magnolia fordiana) protected by law in Hong Kong, the Holey Hainanese Amydrium (Amydrium hainanense), a relatively recent discovery in Hong Kong, the woody vine Birdwood's Mucuna (Mucuna birdwoodiana) with its waxy bird-like flowers, and the perennial herbaceous plants, the Chinese Chirita (Primulina dryas) and Cut-leaved Begonia (Begonia palmata) which both grow on boulders.

We hope that the exhibition, followed by a competition and a series of workshops, can be a gateway into the wonderful world of Hong Kong's native plants. We welcome visitors from all backgrounds to discover connections with the plant world, whether you are a plant enthusiast, an art connoisseur, or a first-time visitor to native flora. Whilst appreciating natural aesthetics, we also hope to inspire reflection on the importance of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, thereby promoting broader conservation awareness.

Jenny has worked at the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium, School of Life Sciences and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, focusing on plant taxonomy research and the Botany STEAM Education Project. While working at KFBG on native plant conservation, she continues to nurture her botanical illustration skills and is currently pursuing an online Certificate in Botanical Illustration at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

In 2024, she participated in publishing and illustrating the line drawing of the rare and endangered Hong Kong Begonia (Begonia hongkongensis) in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, a publication with over 200 years of history. She hopes to promote the importance of botanical illustration and plant taxonomy to the public through this art exhibition.
