Discover Why Biodiversity Matters

Hong Kong may be a highly urbanised city, but it is also home to a remarkable variety of wildlife and habitats. Biodiversity supports the health, balance and resilience of the natural world around us.

At KFBG, we are dedicated to conserving this precious yet fragile natural heritage. Through wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, endangered species conservation, native plant conservation, forest restoration, ecological enhancement and public education, we aim to inspire every visitor to deepen their connection with nature and take an active role in its protection. This long-term commitment was recently recognised with the world’s first Premium-Tier Certification under The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS).

When you visit, you are not only enjoying a day in nature — you are also connecting with the ongoing work to protect Hong Kong’s biodiversity.

What is Biodiversity and why does it matter?

Biodiversity refers to the staggering variety of life on Earth — from the microscopic fungi in the soil to the towering native trees and the apex predators in our skies. It is our planet's life-support system. A biodiverse ecosystem provides us with clean air, fresh water, fertile soil for food, and natural protection against floods and extreme weather. Without this balance, our city's resilience is compromised.

Why is Hong Kong a "Biodiversity Hotspot"?

Despite its small size, Hong Kong's subtropical climate and varied terrain make it a global treasure trove. Our city hosts more bird species than the entire United Kingdom and more species of hard corals than the Caribbean Sea. This incredible density of life makes every square metre of our country parks and sanctuaries like KFBG vital for regional survival.

What are the greatest threats to local wildlife?

Hong Kong's nature faces three primary challenges: habitat loss due to urban development, invasive species that outcompete native life, and the accelerating effects of climate change.

⚠ Currently, over 25% of our local species are at risk of local extinction.
