The Organisation
We are looking for an Assistant Horticultural Foreman who aligns with our vision and value and to be passionate to join the organisation to help making a difference. The job holder will work within a team of gardeners in the daily care of KFBG’s unique ex-situ conservation collection and displays of native plants in the Walter Kerr Garden and other Lower Hillside landscapes, following instructions from the Horticultural Supervisor. They will perform horticultural practices such as planting, weeding, transplanting, mulching, fertilizing and pest control and plant protection to a high standard. They will also help to ensure that the spaces they work in are safe for both the public and KFBG staff. They will have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork to collect seeds and propagation material of native species in the wild and to assist the nursery-based staff in preparing plants for ex-situ conservation, ecological restoration, and botanical display.

Major responsibilities
- To assist the supervisory staff to develop & look after theme gardens & exhibition areas in KFBG and provide supervision for the gardening team when necessary.
- Daily care of the ex-situ conservation collection of native species planted out within KFBG, including irrigation, mulching, fertilizing, pest control, plant protection & seed collection as and when necessary.
- Take charge of the control of invasive species within the garden team’s areas of responsibility.
- To assist with the maintenance of vegetation on green rooves working safely at height and the occasional maintenance of streamside vegetation.
- Operate powered gardening tools for site maintenance.
- To assist in implementing enhancement planting projects in the Upper Farm.
- Participate in field trips to identify, collect, and understand the growing requirements of candidate native plant species for forest restoration, greening and landscaping in KFBG.
- Maintain workplace safety, including keeping trails free from slip and trip hazards and rubbish, safe and tidy use of the worker’s restroom, and report potential safety issues to the supervisor.
- Assist in monitoring the compliance by team members with all safety guidelines.
- Discuss and report details of daily work to the supervisor.
Job Requirements
- Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of KFBG.
- At least 1 year of experience working with a range of plants, with a good knowledge of horticultural techniques and good organizational ability.
- Experience in hiking or other outdoor physical activities, as well as interest and knowledge of native plants, is an advantage.
- Good command of spoken and written Chinese. Knowledge of English is an advantage.
- Possession of a valid Class 2 driving license is an advantage.
- Physically fit for outdoor work, including working on slopes.
- Able to work on occasional Sundays if necessary, or on holidays.
