Forest Management Foreman (Biochar Team)
Flora Conservation Department

Job Summary

The Forest Management Foreman is a key member of the Biochar Team, assisting the Arborist to plan and execute a wide variety of tree and forest management operations in order to improve tree health, enrich the ecological diversity of KFBG’s secondary forests and maximise the sustainability of our wood recycling programme.

The post-holder should have at least one year’s landscaping works experience with a track record for ensuring routine work safety. S/he should be physically fit and able to work outdoors for extended periods in hot and humid conditions, including in KFBG’s backyard areas, as well as on slopes and inside the forest. S/he will possess strong interpersonal skills to help facilitate cohesive team performance and to assist in supervising contractors. S/he will have a passion for native woodland management and the potential of nature-based solutions.

 Major Responsibilities
  1. Forest restoration works:
  • Undertake restoration works including but not limited to plant surveys, seed collection, weeding, tree planting, direct seeding, pruning and thinning of trees; and
  • Operate horticultural and arboricultural equipment such as chainsaw, strimmer, and so on.
  1. Wood recycling programme:
  • Recycle wood debris in KFBG, by assisting the Special Machinery Operator to operate machinery including woodchipper, wood log splitter, forklift truck, grab-mounted lorry, biochar machine and bobcat (for all of which on-job training can be provided); and
  • Assist in the repair and maintenance of all the above-mentioned machinery.
  1. Supervision of contractors:
  • Assist the team leader with tender preparation;
  • Supervise contractors to perform their duties to the stipulated standard; and
  • Oversee contractors’ works to ensure they are in line with safety standards and appropriate procedures.
  1. Other:
  • Participate in activities arranged by KFBG with the intention of developing organisational culture;
  • Help tidy up the site, especially fallen trees and branches, after typhoon and heavy rainfall;
  • Serve as a standby driver for FLO (if in possession of suitable driver’s license); and
  • Perform other duties as requested by management.
Requirements
  • Commitment to the mission, vision and values of KFBGC;
  • At least one year’s hands-on experience in landscaping work and supervision of contractors;
  • Clear communication and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Good team player, competent with planning and leadership;
  • Familiar with horticultural and arboricultural techniques
  • Ideally able to use equipment such as chainsaw, strimmer, etc., and competent in basic machinery repair;
  • Valid Hong Kong driving license (class 1 and 2) preferred; and
  • Physically fit for regular physically demanding tasks.
