Trainee Tree Climber (Silvicultural Tree Team)

Job Summary

The Trainee Tree Climber is a junior member of the Silvicultural Tree Team, learning from the Tree Team Leader and assisting the team to execute a wide variety of tree and forest management tasks, including undertaking basic tree works and plant care duties. With a firm emphasis on tree health and the ecological function of KFBG’s forests, the post-holder will be instructed in fundamental aspects of occupational safety, equipment maintenance, plant growth and physiology, forest ecology and silviculture. S/he should have a passion for biodiversity, native species conservation and the restoration of forest ecosystems.

S/he should be physically fit and able to work outdoors and at height for extended periods in hot and humid conditions for daily operation, including in KFBG’s backyard areas, as well as on slopes and inside the forest. S/he will possess strong interpersonal skills to help facilitate cohesive team performance.

Major Responsibilities
  1. Conduct plant care and tree-related works:
    • Conduct works including weeding, tree planting, pruning, climbing, felling.
    • Undertake tree risk assessments, as per requests, and
  1. Ensure all the works are in line with up-to-date technical and safety standards, and so on:
    • Maintain and repair tree team’s gears; and
    • Check the condition of the tree team’s equipment and tools regularly and update gear inventory.
  1. Facilitate FLO’s wood recycling programme;
    • Collect and transport all wood debris produced from tree work and
    • Operate woodchippers and wood log splitter to recycle all wood debris as necessary.
  1. Other:
    • Participate in activities arranged by KFBG with the intention of developing the organizational culture.
    • Tidy up the venue, especially fallen trees and branches, after typhoon and heavy rainfall.
    • Serve as a standby driver for FLO (if in possession of a suitable driver’s license) and perform other duties as requested by management.
Requirements
    • Hardworking, self-disciplined and willing to learn.
    • Clear communication and excellent interpersonal skills.
    • Preferably possess recognized certificates in tree climbing and use of chainsaw.
    • Ideally have basic knowledge of native trees of Hong Kong.
    • Physically fit for regular physically demanding tasks, especially work at height; and
    • Valid Hong Kong driving license (class 2) preferred.
