Assistant Restoration Ecologist (Native Tree Nursery)
Flora Conservation Department

Major responsibilities
  • Plan and safely conduct field trips to identify native plant species and collect suitable propagation material for plant conservation, research, and urban greening projects.
  • Ensure accurate record keeping for field collections and planting activities, collaborating with the Plant Records Officer to utilise the Iris-BG database, develop native species photo libraries and avoid double record keeping.
  • Assist the NTN Restoration Ecologist in the supervision, management, and administration of the NTN team, preparing seedlings for forest restoration initiatives inside and outside KFBG, and selecting suitable species for sale to external parties.
  • Develop and utilize horticultural techniques to germinate, cultivate and propagate native plants and supervise nursery staff to produce vigorous and healthy plants suitable for forest restoration projects and urban greening in Hong Kong.
  • Establish rare species in suitable locations within KFBG Conservation, including the early phase bare root planting of species difficult to maintain in NTN. Investigate and implement new cultivation protocols to overcome these barriers in the nursery.
  • Organise, oversee and assist in the monitoring and appropriate labelling of tree planting initiatives within KFBG, to track the progress of conservation accessions, enrich and restore forest canopy on site and showcase local tree diversity and its associated fauna to visitors.
Job Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in biology, plant science, ecology, conservation or horticulture, and ideally a postgraduate degree in a similar field.
  • Professional experience in a relevant post would be ideal, preferably with a demonstrable track record in people management.

  • Experience in the use of databases for handling and processing plant information, including maps, images, herbarium specimens, biological samples and so on is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of statistical and/or GIS software packages to analyse ecological data would be a distinct advantage.

  • Passionate about native plant diversity and its conservation.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Diligent, detail-oriented, open-minded and recognises the validity of all spiritual paths.
